| Innovaction 2007 14 February 2007 The fair of Knowledge, Idea and Innovation for your Company Tonutti Company, together with UNACOMA and the University of Udine (Dept. of Ag Science & Technology), has developed a new machine to harvest hemp.Tonutti Company has the pleasure of presenting this new machine to the public for the first time at Innovaction 2007 . Hemp is considered with great interest for crop rotation thanks to its capability of improving soil fertility with benefit to subseqent crops, controlling weeds, reducing the need for chemical and mechanical weeding, resisting disease and parasites and reducing the use of chemical products. Therefore, hemp is in line with modern environmentally friendly farming trends. For over a decade, the EU has introduced economic incentives in favour of non-food ag productions due to new economic and enviroment requirements and new ag targets and policies. Amongst these targets there is also the supply of natural fibre for use in the textile industry and for use in other industrial applications to replace sinthetic fibre. Worldwide, the availability of fibre from ag production amounts to approximately 2.5 million tons. These are almost entirely directed towards the textile industry and only in a minimum quantity towards other industrial applications. Considering the opportunities to develop activities from seed production to cultivation and on to fibre production, field testing will include the testing of hemp varieties for the textile industry and others for other industrial applications.
